The number of German Shepherds in Germany, as in most other countries in the world except North America, outnumbers all other working breeds put together. It’s quite common to see a German Shepherd accompanying it’s owner in restaurants, department stores, sidewalk cafes, bars, banks, beer halls, on walks through the woods (there are cathedral-like forests everywhere in Germany, with miles and miles and miles of well maintained walkways), or going shopping at the town square open market. Rarely will you see an uncontrolled German Shepherd, or somebody being pulled by a dog for a walk (run), because most dog owners are members in Schutzhund clubs for the purpose of training their dogs. A city of 300,000 in Germany has at least 5 or more Schutzhund training clubs to choose from, to go training, or to just socialize your dog, - or yourself (most training (Schutzhund) clubs in Germany have a club house with restaurant and a fully stocked bar). For some dog owners, Schutzhund training is a sport or hobby that consumes their entire spare time, including most weekends and holidays. Often, entire families are dog nuts and enjoy going to the various levels of Schutzhund trials all over Europe, many times within easy driving distance.
